NHL teams in biggest need of in-season trade Bruins Penguins Stars

Even though the NHL trade deadline is still a few months away, it's never too early to start thinking about which teams need to start doing a little shopping. Or, if the case may be, a little selling.Especially now that the contenders are starting to get a better idea as to what they have and what they might need, and the teams that are falling out Rodger Saffold Jersey of the playoff race start to put their tradeable a sets on the market.By the time the NHL trade deadline comes around most of the teams in the league will have made some sort of a deal. These three teams, though, stand out right now as teams that need some sort of in-season trade more than others. One of the top teams in the Eastern Conference for several seasons, the Bruins have for the time being taken a step backward. When combined with the rise of up-and-coming teams like Tampa Bay and the New York Islanders, the Bruins are starting to look rather ordinary in the East. Some of that is due to injuries to key players, but even when healthy they are still lacking in some areas, especially when it comes to their offense. And this is where you remember that two years ago they not only traded a 21-year-old to the Dallas Stars, but also seemed pretty darn proud of the fact that they did it. He is now one of the most dangerous offensive players in the NHL and looks like he's going to be competing for scoring titles on a yearly basis for the foreseeable future. They could really use a guy like that right about now.The le son here: Don't trade 21-year-olds with superstar potential that have already shown that they can play in the NHL. But what's done is done, and Seguin isn't walking through that door. Still, this team needs offense, and it needs a lot of it. As of Friday the Bruins are 19th in the NHL in goals per game, 22nd in total shots on goal per game and 23rd in 5-on-5 shots on goal per 60 minutes. Nobody on the team has more than six goals, while only one has more than five ( has six). That just isn't good enough, and the shot numbers and the fact that they're not suffering from any unreasonably poor shooting luck are pretty strong indicators that it's not going to get much better with the guys they have. Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos tweeted Thursday night that the Bruins and Oilers may have restarted trade talks, perhaps involving . The Bruins have plenty to offer that might intrigue the Oilers, from young defensemen to goaltenders or Malcolm Subban. The Eastern Conference is still a wide-open race, and even though the Bruins have taken a step back this season they can still be right in the thick of Darrell Baker Jr. Jersey the Stanley Cup chase once they start getting healthier ... just as long as they find some more offense. If this seems like it's a yearly thing, that's because it is. But the Penguins really need some help on the wings, and this was true even before , , and (their four most talented wingers) went down with injuries over the past couple of weeks. General manager Jim Rutherford can be a pretty aggre sive in-season mover, and based on his trading history he seems to like to make his move well ahead of the deadline. In recent years under former GM Ray Shero the Penguins made a habit out of dealing draft picks or mid-level prospects for stop-gap rentals that included the James Williams Jersey likes of Gary Roberts, Marian Ho sa, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Alex Kovalev, Brenden Morrow and Jarome Iginla. Some of them worked out. Some of them did not. They really need to avoid that type of move this season for two reasons. 1) The "rental" options aren't very intriguing, unle s you still believe that Chris Stewart is going to rediscover that 28-goal form he showed a few years ago; 2) They really need somebody who is going to be with the team long-term. Their current wingers, when healthy, are starting to get a little long in the tooth (Kunitz and Dupuis) and they have little help coming through the pipeline given their recent draft philosophy that focu sed more on defensemen and centers. The only wingers with top-line potential in the organization right now are 2014 first-round pick Kasperi Kapanen, who is currently playing in Europe, and Bennett, who is starting to become more of a suspect than a prospect, if for no other reason than the fact he seems to have the worst injury luck in the league. The problem they might run into is that the type of long-term solutions on the wing they should be targetting (David Perron, , if the Jets ever made him available for some insane reason, etc.) would cost the type of blue-chip propects the organization is currently lacking beyond Kapanen and Derrick Pouliot. Pouliot would be an intriguing trade chip, but he's probably their best prospect -- and perhaps one of the best in the league -- and given the free-agent status of defensemen and after this season, it could be tough to part with that type of player. They shouldn't overreact to their current injury woes and make a desperation trade right this instant. But even when they start getting guys back they're still going to need some help up front because as good as and are, they still need some support. Arden Key Jersey GM Jim Nill has done a nice job adding offensive talent to his team and it created a great deal of hype around the Stars heading into this season, especially after they made the playoffs a last season playing an exciting, back-and-forth brand of hockey. But there were still some significant flaws with the roster, especially as it relates to the defense. Two months into the season, with the Stars still scoring goals like a playoff team, they find themselves deep in the Western Conference wild-card standings because they simply cannot stop anybody. They already made one trade a couple of weeks ago to send Brendan Dillon to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for , but that's not really going to be enough to fix everything that is ailing this team on the blue line. is a quality NHL defensemen, but he's not the type of guy who is going to drive a championship-level defense. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman appeared on Toronto radio Friday morning and said that Nill is likely waiting for a defenseman on the level of a Brent Seabrook or Marc Staal to come available before making a blue-line move. But even if that type of defensemen doesn't become available, there should still be options available among the NHL's list of sellers. One player that should interest them is Carolina Hurricanes rearguard , an unrestricted free agent after this season who has been consistently underrated throughout his career. He's not going to score 11 goals again like he did last season, but when Jayon Brown Jersey it comes to defending and helping to drive po se sion, he is a rock-solid defenseman who could be a nice upgrade without having to give up the farm.Normally teams that are as far out of a playoff spot as the Stars are right now don't have much of a chance to get back into it. But with their firepower up front and a capable netminder in , another defenseman or two could make a huge impact for this team.
